Stages of the Sales Funnel: Turning Your Visitors Into Customers

Sales funnels have become increasingly popular over the years.

Many marketers see them as an essential part of their online business and today, we’re going to take a look at the stages of a sales funnel.

We’re going to take a look at what the stages are and why each individual stage is important.

Plus, we’re also going to look at how each stage could translate into real-life components of your stage funnel.

What are The Four Stages of a Sales Funnel?

Well, this is quite a funny question actually, as many marketers use different terms for the stages of the sales funnel.

No matter what stages I use here, there will always be somebody else using different terms for each stage, so when you somebody else uses a different term, you know why.

Anyways, here are the four stages of the sales funnel:

  1. Awareness
  2. Interest
  3. Decision
  4. Action

I find these terms are the best way to describe the process up to the purchase, but it does also depend on the business.

If we’re talking about an outdoor food stand at a festival, it would probably go straight from awareness to desire and action.

What I am saying is that the four stages always depend on the business, so do keep that in mind. 

Awareness

The first stage of the sales funnel is awareness. Without this stage, there wouldn’t be the rest of the sales funnel, so it’s pretty important.

Now at this point, we are just making the future customer aware of our product or service. This is just so that they at least know of us which makes it much more likely for them to purchase later down the line.

 

The chances of someone purchasing from a business that they know is much higher than them purchasing from a business that they don’t know.

Common sense stuff, but the longer you think about it, the more you’ll understand why brands spend millions on TV advertisements.

It’s not for the direct conversion, it’s to make customers aware of who they are. In your business, this stage may translate into a Facebook or YouTube ad, or your organic search result. 

Wherever the customer is first made aware of whatever it is that you do, that’s the awareness stage. If you’re trying to straight away push for the sale, in most cases, you’ll fail. 

Interest

As important as awareness is, it’s nothing without interest.

If the customer has no interest in your product or service, why the f would they buy it? Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t have to be the type of interest they take in a hobby, it can be any type of interest.

For example, we have an interest in water because we need it to survive. I guess interest isn’t always the right word, but for most businesses, it will be. Or, if not I guess you could switch it out with the word motive.

Anyway, the way we trigger interest in most cases could be through a variety of different marketing channels. Email marketing, social media or blogging could be three channels that we use to create interest in the customer.

For example, if I want to sell email marketing software, I might make blog posts or social media posts that explain why email marketing will help businesses sell more products. This will trigger a lot of interest in business owners because they want to sell more products. 

You usually trigger interest by educating your audience on how they can gain a certain benefit. So, if you want to trigger interest, figure out how the product you want to sell helps your customer get a benefit.

Decision

The next stage of the sales funnel is decision. At this point, the customer starts to decide why they need/want your product.

You can also call this stage desire as the customer starts to have a desire in purchasing your product. This stage usually isn’t really tied to one of your marketing channels like your blog, email, or anything like that, it’s more in the customer’s mind.

Although, you can push the sale at this stage with scarcity, social proof, discounts, and a dozen other marketing tactics. You can do this through email, retargeting ads, and just by popping up everywhere your customer looks, so I guess it is kind of tied to your marketing channels.

Anyway, this is the final stage before the purchase and it really comes down to 2 things:

  • Benefits 
  • Costs

Does your product’s benefits outweigh the costs of the product? 

You can’t actually answer this question with a yes or no, as the benefits have to outweigh the costs in the customer’s mind. If they don’t, they’re not going to buy. It’s as simple as that. 

Action

Lastly, we have action. 

This is where they enter your website URL, go to your store and purchase. Or, message you and say that they want to hop on a call about X service you offered to them. Whatever it is, this is where whoever you are attempting to sell too finally becomes a customer.

Not so fast… At this point, things can still go wrong.

For one, if the customer can’t find what he wants to buy, he may go somewhere else.

Again, this is dependant on how big the benefits are and how unique your product is.

If they can just get that same product anywhere else and can’t find yours, well, they’ll just go somewhere else.

So, what it comes down to this phase, the most important factors are:

  • Branding & how unique your product is
  • Ease of access

I’m not going to talk about branding and uniqueness of your product, as you should probably read a book on that. Plus, I suck at it myself (Sad face). 

But, what I will say about ease of access is that you should make your product as easily accessible as possible.

This is how Amazon crushed Walmart and other brick & mortar retailers, they just made it 100x easier for customers to access the products, while with other retailers they would have to go to the store.

If your products are much easier accessed than your competitors, you’re probably going to crush them as well.

After The Sale, What’s Next?

We know that sales funnels are good for businesses, but what happens after the sale? After the sale, this whole thing is finished… NOT. 

Now it’s about keeping that customer and making repeat sales.

The first step to keeping your customer is having a good product that gives them some sort of benefit. 

No product with 0 perceived value is ever going to be bought again by customers. Even, cheaply made clothing brands that sell their items for extremely high markups have perceived value to the customer. 

The customer clearly likes the look or the feeling of having that clothing item. So, the first step is to have a good product, or at least a product with some type of perceived value. 

Then, it’s a case of using the tools available to you to make it more likely for the customer to purchase next time they need or want the product.

Some of these tools are:

  • Order bumps, upsells & downsells (this is for just after the transaction, but still)
  • Recurring billing (easiest way to generate repeat business, duh?)
  • Email marketing (stay connected with that customer)
  • Social media + retargeting ads (stay in their minds) 
  • Content marketing (Give them value post-sale, also makes them like you + stay in their minds)

How To Build a Sales Funnel For Free

Everyone wants to create sales funnels, as they are such an efficient tool for making sales online.

However, many sales funnel builders are quite expensive, often they can range anywhere from $97 to $499 per month.

For beginners, those numbers are probably quite shocking which is why some decide to never start online. But, in this article, we are going to take a look at how to build a sales funnel for free.

Not only am I going to be showing you a completely free method, but I will also show you how you can send emails to your leads as well. This means, there will be no cost for you at all, so stay tuned.

How To Build a Sales Funnel For Free

If you would like to create a funnel for free, here are the three steps you need to take:

  1. Pick platforms
  2. Start building your funnel
  3. Add your autoresponder (also free)

I will show you how to complete all these 3 steps for free. Now, keep in mind there will be some things like a domain that you will have to pay for because you can’t get those for free.

Also, this is not the best way to build a sales funnel, as it is completely free. The free way is never the best way, but it might be enough for when you are getting started.

What is a “Funnel”?

According to Wikipedia, “The purchase funnel, or purchasing funnel, is a consumer-focused marketing model that illustrates the theoretical customer journey toward the purchase of a good or service”

In short, it’s the journey that turns a visitor into a customer. This journey is usually illustrated in a funnel-type graph with 4 or 5 steps, as you can see below.

Don’t worry about the stages or steps too much, as that usually depends on the business. 

Online, we usually use specific pages to build our sales funnel which are focused on getting conversions. This could be a soft conversion like capturing an email that eventually leads to a hard conversion, for example, a sale.

What goes into a Funnel?

There are no hard requirements on what goes into a funnel.

If you’re a freelancer on a site like Fiverr or Upwork, that could be part of your funnel and could be where the initial contact is built that pulls them down the rest of the funnel.

For me, I like my funnels to include:

  • Pages that collect emails
  • Sales pages (if I am selling a product)
  • Emails (for follow-ups)

That’s it, nothing too complicated. And, I believe that’s what most people talk about when they mention “funnels”, so I’m going to show you how you can get all these things for free.

Step 1: Picking a Platform

The first step is picking a platform.

As you’re trying to do this all for free, you only have 2 options.

Option 1: MailerLite

Mailerlite is good but doesn’t let you sell products. Plus, they don’t allow affiliate marketing so that will be a big blow for some of you. This option could work for some coaches or other types of service-based businesses or influencers that would just like to keep in contact with their audience.

There is also no custom domain functionality on the free plan.

Option 2: GrooveFunnels

This is the better option in my opinion. It’s free, you can connect custom domains, sell products, and collect emails. You can sign up for a free Groove account here.

GrooveFunnels is also the only free Kartra alternative, so it’s an option worth considering if you’re on a budget.

While Groove doesn’t have email marketing tools (yet), I will show you another free autoresponder later on in this article. For now, just follow through with these steps.

Step 2: Starting to build a Funnel

I’m not going to get too much into detail about using a drag and drop builder.

If you would like to sell a product, you first have to add the product inside of GrooveSell. After you have signed up for Groove, just go to GrooveSell, then add a new product.

Fill in all the requirements for your product such as price and all the other info needed. Then, connect your favorite payment processor like PayPal or Stripe.

If you just want to collect emails and sell affiliate products, there is no need to do this.

In that case, just head over to GroovePages and start building your pages. Here you can select a template and start editing it.

You can drag blocks and elements to make up your page. I think a 4-year-old could do this, so I’m not going to go into too much detail about this.

Once you have built your page, you now need to connect a custom domain.

Connecting a Custom Domain

If you would like to connect a custom domain (which you should), you first need to purchase one.

Not having a custom domain will make you look a little unprofessional, but I guess it’s your choice.

Over at NameCheap, you can get your own domain name for like $7 or $8.

Register it, then follow the tutorial inside of Groove to connect your custom domain. The instructions will show after hitting publish, as it will ask you whether you want to publish on your own domain.

Follow the instructions. They may sound a little confusing at first, but you just copy and paste the record into your NameCheap DNS record. Once you have done so, it can take up to 24 hours for the domain to be available in GrooveFunnels.

You can also ask the NameCheap support to help you if you have 0 experience with domains.

Step 3: Adding an Autoresponder

Now, we have all the front-end parts of our funnel, the pages.

However, we want the system to shoot emails at our leads on autopilot after they give us their email addresses. Or, at least I do.

For this, you need to use Aweber, which is the only free autoresponder for affiliate marketing. 

It’s a free autoresponder, but there no behavior-based automation sequences. You can send emails automatically on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and so on of that lead being on your list.

But, what you can’t do is send Email A automatically if they click here, but if they don’t then send another email automatically. That’s only available if you upgrade for $19 per month, but if you’re just starting out I guess you don’t need that yet.

However, it will really just help you make more money and $19 per month is nothing, but again your choice.

Writing Emails

Write some emails related to your product. This post isn’t meant to be some email marketing lesson, nor a copywriting lesson, but I will give you some tips.

First look for somebody successful selling the same type of product as you, now opt-in to their emails.

Take a look at how they are selling their products and do something very similar.

You don’t want to try to be too “salesy” in each email, just use simple language and talk to your lead like they were your friend. If the lead likes you, they are more likely to open your emails which will increase your sales.

Step 4: Integrating Aweber + GrooveFunnels

Lastly, you need to integrate (connect) aweber and Groove to get this whole thing talking and working.

However, as of right now, it’s not… yet.

As I mentioned earlier, originally GetResponse was just an autoresponder.

However, that time has long past, it now has become a complete marketing system.

GetResponse auto funnel will even track the ROI of your campaigns, so that is extremely strong.

Rarely have I seen an autoresponder that comes with a webinar feature.

Well, GetResponse does.

This means you can host free and paid webinars using GetResponse.

CRM 

Lastly, we have the CRM.

GetResponse’s CRM tool helps you turn lead into sale from one visual and easy to use dashboard.

But, in case you are looking for the most advanced CRM tool, I have to disappoint you a little. It’s not quite advanced as a full CRM or ActiveCampaign’s CRM, you can read more on that here.

How Do Their Email Marketing & Funnel Tools Compare?

Something you’re probably wondering about is their funnel builder and email marketing tools.

GetResponse’s funnel builder is not quite as advanced as Karta’s and you would be missing out on these checkout features:

  • Order bumps
  • Upsells
  • Downsells
  • More checkout integrations

Kartra also has a much nicer editor and the pop-ups are a little more mobile-friendly from my experience at least.

In terms of email marketing, they are almost identical. 

Kartra has a few more triggers as all features are inside of Kartra.

For example, you can trigger by:

  • Whether contact is an active affiliate
  • Whether contact has watched % of a sales video
  • Whether contact has completed section x of membership

As GetResponse doesn’t have these features, they don’t have the triggers. But, other than that, these two are identical. 

Kartra Pricing

There are four main Kartra plans available, but you can request custom pricing if you need an Enterprise solution.

What I like about Kartra’s pricing is that you get access to all features across all plans, other than Kartra agency which is a feature that helps you manage clients’ accounts (and sell them).

Kartra Starter ($99 Per Month)

Kartra starter is the perfect plan for a lot of beginners.

Inside of Kartra starter, you will find ALL features other than Kartra agency. 

Here are the limitations of this plan:

  • 50 GB Bandwidth
  • 2,500 Contacts
  • 15,000 Emails
  • 2 Membership sites
  •  100 Pages
  • 1 Helpdesk
  • 1 Custom domains
  • No Kartra agency

Kartra Silver ($199 Per Month)

The Kartra Silver plan will be the best plan for most businesses.

Here you do get access to Kartra agency and there are significantly fewer limits.

There are practically no limits to this plan other than:

  • 12,500 contacts
  • 3 Custom domains

You get unlimited of every other resource. 

Kartra Gold ($299 Per Month)

Given that Kartra Silver comes with almost unlimited everything, you would expect Kartra Gold too.

And, that’s the case.

The only limits here are:

  • 25,000 contacts
  • 5 Custom Domains

Other than that, you get access to unlimited resources and all features.

Kartra Platinum ($499 Per Month) 

Lastly, the Kartra Platinum plan just offers an option for established businesses.

Here the only limits are:

  • 10 Custom Domains
  • 50,000 Contacts

Again, there are no other limits. 

GetResponse Pricing

GetResponse also has four pricing plans.

They update dynamically based on the number of contacts, where you are, and whether you pay annually, so I recommend just checking out the GetResponse website.

But, if you have less than 1,000 contacts you can also use the table below.

One thing to note is that you do not get access to automation workflows in the $15 per month plan, so I would say it’s practically useless.

This means you would have to be on at least the $49 per month plan. 

Kartra vs GetResponse: Main Differences

The main difference between Kartra and GetResponse is that Kartra has a lot more features. It’s also a little better when it comes to building landing and sales pages, while GetResponse has webinars and a little more advanced CRM feature.

Both options are incredibly good at what they do. 

However, Kartra gives you more of an all-in-one feel, while GetResponse was originally just an autoresponder.

GetResponse is also a little more affordable compared to Kartra. But, if you need the features Kartra has to offer, going for Kartra is worth it. 

Picking The Right Funnel Builder For You

Both Kartra and GetResponse are fantastic funnel builder tools.

They offer:

  • Great email marketing features
  • Easy-to-use Funnel builder
  • Competitively priced plans

However, they do differentiate a little when it comes to the features.

On the flip side, here are some features only available in GetResponse:

Well, it depends on your business.

If you need the features inside of Kartra, go for Kartra.

Or, if you’re fine using the features that are in GetResponse, go for GetResponse.

If you’re not sure, then you probably won’t need the features like membership sites only in Kartra, so then you can go for GetResponse.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, both Kartra and GetResponse offer great solutions for businesses of all sizes.

If you wanted to, you could even go with Kartra and integrate with GetResponse via the API.

However I don’t see much point in this, as Kartra has all the email marketing features Kartra has.

It really comes down whether you need these features:

  • Video hosting
  • Kartra Calendar
  • Affiliate management
  • Order bumps
  • One-click Upsells & downsells

If you do, go with Kartra.

And, if you don’t, then GetResponse can be a just as good option while being more affordable.

Kartra is an all-in-one solution that helps its customers build an online business. 

Kartra didn’t launch until 2018, but Genesis Digital the company behind Kartra was founded in 2013.

Despite not launching until 2018, it’s already one of the best sales funnel builders on the market. In my review of Kartra, I went into detail explaining how to use the software for your online business, feel free to check that out.

What is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit is an email marketing service provider founded in January 2013. 

It’s on its way to becoming not only one of the best autoresponders for affiliate marketing but also for content creators in general. 

It offers comprehensive email marketing features and also some advanced features to help you send and collect emails on autopilot.

Kartra Features

As I mentioned earlier, Kartra is a true all-in-one platform.

This means it comes with a little more features than ConvertKit, as you can see below.

Page-Builder, Forms, Funnels & Templates 

Firstly, we have the easy-to-use page builder which of course comes with quite a lot of templates (100).

The page builder comes with templates for all kinds of different templates such as:

  • Upsell pages
  • Login pages
  • Legal Pages
  • And many more, as you can see below.

Kartra Templates

Kartra is also a funnel builder, so you can build your entire funnel inside of Kartra.

Another feature here is the ability to create forms and pop-ups which are also incredibly easy to integrate with external pages.

You can even just copy and paste the code of the form and you’re good to go.

Advanced Checkouts

Kartra Checkouts are extremely advanced.

They include features such as: 

  • Order-bumps
  • 1 Click-upsells & downsells
  • Templates for the checkouts

Email Marketing

Kartra has great email marketing tools which let you stay connected with your customer.

Despite, ConvertKit being an autoresponder, Kartra matches the email features.

Inside of Kartra, you will find split-testing inside of automation workflows, as well as features such as lead tagging

Just like your normal autoresponder, right? In fact, Kartra actually has more triggers, as it’s connected to Kartra.

For example, you can give your contact a tag if they:

  • Are an active affiliate
  • Have watched X % of your sales video
  • Have refunded X product

These are triggers that will not be available in most autoresponders, including ConvertKit. 

It may be available with tons of different integrations, but I am not sure. 

Membership Sites

Kartra offers a great membership site feature to help you create and sell online courses.

Again, the beauty of this is that it’s all inside of Kartra

So, you can tag your lead based on whether they have finished watching X video from your course. 

Video Hosting

And, of course, there won’t be any need for an external video hosting provider such as Wistia, as Kartra has one built-in.

You can even add CTA’s inside of your videos, so it’s pretty much the same as Wistia.

Affiliate Management & Marketplace

Recruiting & managing affiliates to help you make more sales? Kartra does that too.

You actually even get access to the marketplace where affiliates can find your product (if you want them to). This can help you get more affiliates and therefore, more sales.

If you ever wanted to find some affiliate products, you could also use the marketplace.

Calendar 

You also don’t need an external Calendar app such as Calendly, as Kartra has one built-in.

Again, the beauty of this is that it’s from the same dashboard as all your other tools. 

Helpdesk

Kartra has a couple of more features inside of the features, but the final main feature is the helpdesk tool. 

Using Kartra, you can easily connect Helpdesks into your pages which will allow you to just give your users a better experience as it will be easier to contact you.

ConvertKit Features

ConvertKit does not quite have as many features as Kartra, but they do offer enough features to get your email list going. 

Email Marketing

As you would expect, ConvertKit comes with great email marketing features.  

ConvertKit has all the features that you would expect from an email autoresponder such as:

  • Automation workflows
  • Split-testing
  • Lead tagging

Pretty useful, but also standard for an autoresponder.

Landing Pages

Next, we have the landing pages and this is a feature that is great to have. Why?

Because you need to collect emails and you won’t need an external tool to create a landing page.

Of course, you can still use anything else such as your WordPress website or another funnel-builder if you wanted to.

Forms

Just like in Kartra, you can also create your own forms and also integrate these with any other external pages. 

Templates

ConvertKit also comes with many templates for your email and landing pages, allowing you to easily create your pages and emails quickly.

Kartra has four main pricing plans, but Enterprise plans are available upon request.

What’s great about Kartra’s pricing plans is that you get access to all features across all plans, other than Kartra agency which I will explain later on.

Kartra Starter ($99 Per Month)

Kartra starter can be the perfect plan for a lot of start-ups.

It comes with ALL features other than Kartra agency. 

The only limits of this plan are the resources, which are: 

  • 50 GB Bandwidth
  • 2,500 Contacts
  • 15,000 Emails
  • 2 Membership sites
  •  100 Pages
  • 1 Helpdesk
  • 1 Custom domains

Kartra Silver ($199 Per Month)

Next, is the Kartra Silver Plan which I believe will be the perfect plan for most businesses.

Here you do get access to Kartra agency and there are significantly fewer limits.

The only limits in this plan are:

  • 12,500 contacts
  • 3 Custom domains

You get unlimited of all other resources.

Kartra Gold ($299 Per Month)

Next, we have Kartra Gold.

Again, the only limits on this plan are:

  • 25,000 contacts
  • 5 Custom Domains

Other than that, you get access to unlimited resources and all features.

Kartra Platinum ($499 Per Month) 

Lastly, we have the Kartra Platinum plan.

Here the only limits are:

  • 10 Custom Domains
  • 50,000 Contacts

Other than that, there are no limits.

ConvertKit Pricing

ConvertKit does have a free plan, but it’s a little limited.

I also won’t be able to show you the full pricing as it heavily depends on the contacts and ConvertKit has a dynamic pricing table.

Firstly we have the free plan. 

In the free plan, you get to build unlimited landing pages and can send broadcast emails.

However, the main limitation is that you do not get any automation sequences. 

You can have up to 1000 contacts on this plan. 

ConvertKit Complete

The other plan is ConvertKit complete where you get access to all features.

This plan will cost $29 per month for 1,000 contacts.

Kartra vs ConvertKit: Main Differences

The main differences between ConvertKit and Kartra are that while ConvertKit is significantly lower-priced, Kartra comes with a lot more features. Using Kartra you can also sell your products and create membership sites whereas with ConvertKit you cannot.

There are over 500 beautiful templates that are super easy-to-edit.

Now, let’s take a look at Teachable’s features.

As I mentioned earlier, they are much more focused on the membership/course features, as that’s their purpose.

Obviously, as membership sites are the main purpose of Teachable, I’m going to be talking more about the features inside of the membership sites.

Learning Tools

Teachable comes with a lot of features to help your students learn.

  • Feedback

Your students can always give you feedback helping you create a better membership

  • Certificates

With Teachable, you can also give your students Certificates, which shows that they have completed your course.

  • Quizzes

You can also quiz your students which is pretty cool and can be useful.

Analytics

Teachable also has some great reporting tools which allow you to see your revenue and signups over a specific period of time. 

Another thing that you can monitor is your course completion rates to see where you can improve. 

Marketing Tools

Finally, Teachable also comes with marketing tools to help you sell your course.

This includes:

  • Landing & Sales pages
  • Affiliate management
  • Coupons
  • One-time fee or subscription billing

Of course, it’s not quite as advanced as all the features that Kartra has to offer, but these marketing tools are still great.

This means for most of their integrations, you’re going to have to use Zapier. 

Kartra Pricing

Kartra starts at $99 per month. 

But, even in this plan, you get access to ALL features, apart from Kartra agency. 

20-25% Annual discounts are available too. 

Kartra agency is a feature that allows you to manage your client’s account while also selling seperate Kartra accounts, but getting them at a discounted price.

Other than on the starter plan, this feature is included in all plans too. 

What I also like about Kartra is that other than on the starter plan, they don’t limit you with Bandwidth or emails, like they used to. 

The only limit is contacts which is pretty standard for most autoresponders. 

Teachable Pricing

Teachable starts at a much lower $39 per month, but it just doesn’t come with all the features Kartra has to offer. 

Plus, you’re also going to have to pay a 5% transaction fee which is pretty annoying.

It may not sound like a lot, but let’s say, you’re making $1,000 per month selling your courses, that’s an extra $50 charge per month. 

In which case, it would make sense to just upgrade or use Kartra. 

Thinkific pricing

Also, keep in mind, you’re still going to need an autoresponder, which usually costs around $49 per month. 

Overall Winner

Teachable may have slightly more advanced features for inside the membership (certificates, quizzes, etc.), but that does not outweigh the business tools Kartra has to offer:

  • Autoresponder
  • Video hosting
  • Calendar
  • Sales funnel tools
  • More page building options

For me, the winner is Kartra.

Not only from the features but also from the pricing.

If you’re using Teachable, then you need to get an external autoresponder and probably use Zapier too. This costs usually around $49 per month.

And, with Kartra, you’re still going to get much better marketing tools, even in the $99 per month plan. 

Final Thoughts

Just because the winner was Kartra for me, doesn’t mean it has to be the same for you.

If you’re just looking to host a free course and that’s all you want to do, Teachable can be a great option too.

But, if you’re looking to build a business and have powerful marketing tools, then Kartra simply wins here.

The editor (image below) does feel a little like Elementor for WordPress.

Next, we have another feature that makes WishPond unique, social contests.

WishPond allows you to easily create social contests, referral campaigns, and similar events in a couple of clicks. 

This can work great, but you can also probably do this manually with any landing page builder. 

Custom CSS

Lastly, we have the custom CSS feature.

Another feature that is pretty unique compared to most of its competitors.

With WishPond, you can add your own custom CSS to make the pages look exactly how you want them.

GetResponse Features

Despite the low pricing of GetResponse, it has a huge number of features.

Here are the features GetResponse has to offer:

Email Marketing Tools 

Firstly, we have the email marketing tools which you will find inside of GetResponse.

Given that GetResponse was originally just an autoresponder, you would expect these to be strong. 

And, that’s exactly what they are.

GetResponse has all the standard email marketing features such as:

  • Automation workflows (Also, behavior-based)
  • Split-testing 
  • Lead-tagging

I found that compared to WishPond, GetResponse gives you more triggers in the automation workflows, as well as better analytics and more split-testing options.

Not only that, from the plus plan and up, GetResponse also scores the contacts for you, so you can easily determine what actions you need to take to keep your list active. 

Landing Pages 

The next feature inside GetResponse is landing pages & templates. 

GetResponse comes with around 200 templates which you can easily edit to create a landing page that converts your visitor.

It’s easy to use and it also has pop-ups!

Autofunnel

Now, let’s talk about one of my favorite features, the autofunnel feature.

The autofunnel will assist you in building your entire sales funnel which will make it much easier. 

Plus, it will even measure the ROI for you directly!

Webinars

Another cool feature inside GetResponse is the webinars. 

You probably know what a webinar is, but with GetResponse you can host them.

This is a great little feature to have in case you ever need it, even if you don’t need it right now. 

Basic CRM

In the higher plans, GetResponse also comes with a CRM (Customer-relationship management) tool.

It is a little limited compared to other CRM tools out there such as ActiveCampaign, as it does not quite let you automate as much as you can with other options.

Let’s take a look at the costs that both of these solutions come at.

WishPond Pricing

Firstly, we have WishPond’s pricing.

I’m not a big fan of their pricing table. Why?

  1. You can only pay annually
  2. Take a look at how quickly you have to upgrade between the plan as your list grows. 

Wishpond pricing

Yeah, they might start off at $49 per month, but let me give you a contrast comparison on the next pricing plan.

Their “Everything you need” plan lets you collect 2,500 leads.

Kartra another all-in-one solution also offers space for 2,500 leads, but it:

For the SAME price. 

So, that’s why I am not a big fan of WishPond’s pricing, despite there being nothing wrong with their features.

GetResponse Pricing

Just like many other autoresponders GetResponse’s pricing table updates dynamically depending on the number of leads.

Below, you can see the pricing for all plans up to 1,000 leads, but for the full pricing please see their website.

Annual discounts are available too.

Keep in mind, in order to get the needed tools such as automation sequences, you will need the plus plan.

GetResponse pricing

GetResponse pricing also doesn’t increase as rapidly as WishPond’s does.

Here’s what I am talking about, let’s say you’re on the plus plan for GetRespone which already offers more than WishPond. 

While on WishPond, you would have to already be paying $199 per month as soon as you cross 2,500 leads, with GetResponse, you would only have to pay $79 per month for 5,000 subscribers (on the plus plan!)

Who Wins Overall?

WishPond may have social contests and custom CSS, but GetResponse has:

  • better pricing plans (lower cost, more options, etc.)
  • Advantage in email marketing
  • Webinars 
  • Autofunnel
  • CRM (Although, it’s limited)

GetResponse has more features, for a smaller price. 

For me, the clear winner is GetResponse

GetResponse  simply offers more and better features for a smaller price.

The only aspect in which WishPond wins is the social contests and the custom CSS.

Yeah, these features may be quite cool, but they don’t outweigh the tools that GetResponse comes with.

Not only this but if you were to use WishPond, you could only pay annually which I assume is going to be a turnoff for a lot of people. This is quite a similar outcome to Kartra vs WishPond. 

Final Thoughts

Both of these platforms have some great features.

But, the difference is really at the price they come at.

While GetResponse has low-pricing plans across all plans, WishPond starts off low and then increases rapidly.

It’s important that you do take this aspect into account too, because you will quickly exceed 1,000 leads, meaning you could be over-paying pretty quickly.

As I mentioned earlier, Kartra offers tons of more features for the same price as WishPond.

So, you always want to take a look at the competitors and find the best option for you.

Firstly, there are no monthly plans at all, you have to pay annually. 

And, on those plans, there are no refunds, other than a 50% refund if you cancel and refund in the first two months.

It includes split-tests, automation workflows, and lead tagging, so there is no need for an external autoresponder. 

Social Contests

Here’s a feature that makes WishPond a little more unique.

WishPond allows you to easily create referral campaigns, social contests, and all sorts of competitions.

This is great as it allows you to generate User-generated content.

You can do this manually with all landing page builders, but maybe not as easily and not with as many features. 

Custom CSS

Lastly, we have another unique feature which is Custom CSS.

This means, your pages will have a little more flexibility and customization if you use WishPond.

How Much Do They Cost? 

Now, that we have seen what they have to offer, let’s take a look at how much they both cost.

I want you to keep an eye on the price increase as your contacts increase. 

Because, even if you may only need WishPond’s features, you may be better off with Kartra.

But, what’s cool about Kartra is the only difference between the pricing plans is the resources and a special feature called Kartra agency.

This means other than that feature, you get all the features across all plans.

WishPond Pricing

Now, let’s take a look and see how much WishPond costs.

While you may think great just $49 per month, take a look at the increase in price as your contacts increase.

In “Everything you need” you are already paying the same amount as with Kartra’s starter plan for the same amount of leads. 

It’s actually even more, as you pay annually, meaning with Kartra you get the 25% discount. 

Why Kartra Has Much Better Value

Kartra has much better value than WishPond.

As soon as you reach 1,000 leads which will probably be no more than a month or two, Kartra costs the same price.

When you scale up with WishPond, Kartra actually costs less (See image below)

 

Plus, you have to pay annually with WishPond.

Here is a list of features that Kartra offers, but WishPond does not:

I often, try to find scenarios where one product is better than the other, but the only advantages WishPond has over Kartra is:

That’s it and if you compare that to the gigantic list of features Kartra offers which WishPond doesn’t, it’s a clear win for Kartra.

WishPond was founded in 2009 and still has similar features to when it launched.

Kartra wasn’t launched until 2018, but by then the software market was different.

Something I also like about Kartra is that they are constantly looking to improve so that they outperform their competitors.

What Is Split-Testing & How Does It Work?

 

In online marketing, you often hear the word split-testing being thrown around.

And, it’s for a good reason, as split-testing can have great benefits on your conversions.

If your conversions are higher, then you’re going to make more money.

It’s that simple.

What is Split-testing?

What Is Split-Testing? 

Split-testing also is known as A/B testing is the process of testing different variations in marketing. 

The reason why some call it A/B testing is because you are testing variation A vs variation B to see which one generates more conversions. 

Before modern technology, you used to have to manually create both pages (or whatever you’re testing), drive traffic the same amount of traffic to them and then compare the analytics of each page.

However, today, technology is a little more advanced and most software will give you an option to test two different variations.

By doing this, the software will then split the traffic into an equal amount between the two variations and show you the analytics of variation a and b. 

Where Can You Split-Test 

You can split-test pretty much anywhere and anything you want, but here are some common places which marketers like to split-test. 

Emails

Firstly, we have emails.

If you’re building an email sequence, you probably want to know whether Email A or Email B converts best.

So, you can then split-test those emails.

For example, you could see if your story generates more clicks or Email B which is a more personalized email but doesn’t contain a story. 

ActiveCampaign and GetResponse even lets you split-test inside of your automation workflow which is great.

This can also work well throughout your entire automation, combined with lead tagging based on the automation variation they went through. 

If you split-test two different variations of the entire automation workflow and your leads with the variation b tag converted much better, then you know to use that variation of the workflow. 

I also like to test variations if I send an important email to see which one land in the inbox and which one land in the promotions tab. 

Then, I can use the one which lands in the inbox and get a much better open rate. 

Landing & Sales Pages

This one is super important.

On your landing pages & sales pages, conversions are probably the most important thing.

If you can change a sales page to convert 10% better, then that same sales page is generating 10% more money. 

So, by creating two landing or sales pages, then split-testing them, you’re likely to find which one does better. 

Two great platforms that let you split-test extremely well are Kartra and InstaPage. 

Ads

The next one is also extremely important.

It’s ads.

If you are paying for your ad to be clicked, you can drive the cost down by generating more clicks.

Google, Facebook, and the rest optimize their platforms to make money, so they sell the spaces cheaper to advertisers that generate the most clicks.

If your ad isn’t generating clicks and somebody else’s is, Google & Facebook are going to prefer that advertiser and reward him by lowering his cost per click.

When you are buying thousands of clicks, this is a huge advantage.

Plus, you can also split-test different ads to see which one and its audiences convert better with your offer or qualify the visitor better for your offer, then this also has a direct impact on your sales. 

Pop-Ups

Lastly, we have Pop-ups.

And, this is also a really important place to split-test.

If you have a pop-up on your blog which is converting at 2%, there might be a variation that converts at 4%. 

That’s a huge difference. 

Now, every 1,000 visitors, you are collecting 40 emails instead of 20. 

What Elements Can You Split-Test? 

You can split-test pretty much anything you want.

  • Images 
  • Videos 
  • Button Size
  • Button Font
  • Button color 
  • Font size
  • Font Color 
  • Background Image

Pretty much anything on your page or email.

However, what I usually like to split-test is the:

  • Headline
  • Offer
  • Discount
  • Video (If it’s very different or one page uses a video and one doesn’t) 

I like to test things that will have a bigger impact.

If your customer really wants/needs whatever you have to offer, then changing the button color and font size, will probably not make a big change in conversions.

And, unless you are testing with a huge data set of visitors, you won’t even know if that small change in conversions was due to whatever you were testing or just because the people were a little different.

This would then result in more testing and you probably wouldn’t know when to stop.

But, if you would split-test something which would make a bigger impact like the offer, headline, etc. then, you can find meaningful changes much quicker.

That’s just how I do it, I’m sure there will be some people who like to split-test those little elements too. 

Benefits of Split-Testing

Split-testing really just has one benefit which is that you can find what works. 

By split-testing you can find which variation:

  • converts best
  • generates the most amount of traffic
  • is opened or read the most

You get to experiment and see which one will work the best.

That is pretty much the only benefit, but it’s huge. 

If you can change a page or an email to even just convert 1-2% better in the long run, you’re going to make a lot more money.

It’s definitely a useful feature that is available in most sales funnel software and autoresponders which you should be using, once you generate a significant amount of traffic.

If you have an extremely small data set, I wouldn’t worry about it too much as you don’t know if the changes in conversions are due to your changes or if the visitors were just different.
