How To Create A Lead Generation Funnel In 5 Simple Steps

Today, I wanted to teach you how to build a lead generation funnel in just 5 simple steps. We will be talking about both 2-step opt-in forms and multi-step opt-in forms, so whatever you need we will be covering it. 

But why are lead generation funnels so important? 

As in today’s marketing world, we must capture emails to increase the value of a customer. Without capturing our visitor’s emails, we can’t contact them so it will be a lot harder to make sales. Chances are they will see our offer, leave and then never return. 

When collecting emails, we get unlimited chances to sell to our leads, so that is why it increases the value of a visitor. Let’s face it, nobody wants to pay for traffic just for it to leave. 

What Is A Lead Generation Funnel? 

A lead generation funnel is a funnel that focuses on lead generation. 

In case, you don’t know what a funnel is, it’s basically a type of website that is pin-point focused on getting us the conversion. So, in our case, it would be to generate a lead or collect the email address. 

The reason why we use a lead generation funnel is that with a traditional website, the visitor is likely to have a little look and then leave. When using a funnel, this isn’t the case, as the funnel is designed to get us conversions. 

Take a look at the example below, when a visitor who is interested in starting their own e-commerce store lands on this site, what do you think he is going to do?

Exactly, enter their email address. 

Now that we have had a little look at what lead generation funnels are, as well as their benefits, let’s have a look at creating one.

How To Build A Lead Generation Funnel

Below are all the steps that you will need to create your lead generation funnel. Feel free to bookmark this page, in case you need to come back to it.

Also, I recommend that you complete each step as we go along.

Step 1: Software

The first and only thing that we will need is a software that can build funnels and send emails. I recommend GetResponse, as it does both funnel building and email marketing starting at $15 per month, whereas most other options such as ClickFunnels, Instapage, etc. all start at around $99 per month. 

GetResponse also offer a 30 Day Free Trial which is the longest trial and it does not even require a credit card, so in terms of value, it beats everything. Not to mention that they have better email marketing tools than everybody else too.

For this tutorial, I will be going with GetResponse, as I know that most people will be using it as it is the cheapest and the best option.

However, if you are using another funnel builder, then don’t worry the steps are almost the same, you will just have to integrate your funnel with another 3rd party autoresponder.

Step 2: Pick A Template

Next, we need to head over to “create” on the top of the dashboard. 

You have two options here, you can either do it yourself through hitting “landing page”. Or, you can get help creating a “funnel” from GetResponse. Personally, I like to just do it myself. 

However, it’s up to you. 

They are both pretty similar, as you get to choose from the same templates for both anyway. The key difference between the two is that by creating a landing page, you kind of decide the funnel steps yourself, as you can redirect to another custom URL after each step. 

So, if you would like to have more control over the funnel steps, by for example having a multi-step funnel, then I recommend you click “create a landing page”.

Below is an example of what you will see if you click “create a funnel”. As you can see, GetResponse will help you to build the funnel you need. In fact, they even have some lead magnets that you can use. 

Some examples of the templates that are available are below. Don’t worry that’s not all, GetResponse offers over 180 Templates to its customers. As you can see, they look very nice and professional. 


Step 3: Customize

After you have picked a template, you need to customize it. So, add your headlines, images, etc. so that you can use it. 

It’s really simple as it is just to drag & drop meaning that you click on something to change it. However, if you do feel like you need some assistance, feel free to watch the video below. 

Mobile Optimization

When editing your funnel, you should also optimize it for mobile. 

I recommend that you first edit the desktop version, then save it. After you have completed the desktop version, you should click the little mobile icon at the top of the editor. From there, you can edit the mobile version of each step and you can make it look nice on mobile too. 

Make sure that you do this after editing every page, otherwise, you may have one step that does not work for mobile. If that is the case, then you will likely see some losses in conversions.

Step 4: Funnel Map & Thank You Page

The next thing that we need to have a look at is the funnel map & thank you page. 

If you do want to create multiple funnel steps, for example with your affiliate offer then you can do so, by clicking “next step” and in the custom thank you page insert the link to your next step. 

From the next page, you can also add buttons with links to the next step if maybe the offer wasn’t taken up. 

If you don’t need multiple funnel steps then if you have chosen the auto funnel (where GetResponse helps you), you can then create the “Thank you” page by selecting a template.

If you haven’t then in the editor, at the top there should be a little tab that says “Thank you page”. Click on it and then you can also start customizing it. 

Step 5: Connect With Autoresponder

Now that we have created our landing page and thank you page (or funnel steps), we need to connect it with our autoresponder.

As we are using GetResponse, this is really easy and we just need to select our list. If you are using another software, you will have to integrate your software with a 3rd party email autoresponder such as GetResponse.

If you haven’t yet created a list, then save your work and head over to “automation” in the menu (on the dashboard). Then go to “automation messages”, write the first few emails that you want to send the first few days after somebody subscribes. 

Once, you have done this, head back to automation and click “create workflow”. If you have no idea how to build an automation sequence, I recommend taking the interactive tutorial that will pop up after you go into the workflow area. Otherwise, start building your automation!

Test Your Funnel!

Once you have created your funnel and all its steps, you need to test it. 

Test it with a couple of email accounts from different providers (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) to see whether it is working correctly. 

Check that all funnel steps work in the right order, any downloads and also that all the emails send out.

It’s important that you do this, otherwise, you may lose valuable leads.

Checklist For Your Lead Generation Funnel

✔All the steps are working correctly

✔Any downloads are working correctly

✔It’s connected to some sort of autoresponder

✔Emails that are being sent out are being delivered

✔You have tested your funnel multiple times

If your funnel meets all these criteria, congratulations your funnel is ready to go!

How Can I Send Traffic To My Lead Generation Funnel?

Now that we have set up our funnel and emails, I just wanted to show you some ways that you can drive traffic to your funnel to generate leads. 

In terms of traffic, you have a lot of options. 

You can use free traffic such as from your blog, your YouTube channel or your social media accounts. 

Or, if you would like to advertise your funnel then you can use paid ads such as: 

  • Facebook Ads
  • Google Ads
  • Bing Ads
  • Snapchat ads
  • Pinterest ads

Can I Turn This Into A Sales Funnel? 

Yes, if you would wish to add your own products to this funnel, you can do so too.

However, as always I do recommend that you collect emails before selling though. To add products, when editing the funnel steps, you can simply drag the checkout option into where you want to sell it. 

You will then be asked to upload the product image, file, name & to set a price. Now, you have added your own product to the funnel. All you need to do now is integrate it with your payment processor.
