SEM is a popular marketing channel for so many industries. But is it practical for affiliate marketing?
In this SEM affiliate marketing guide, we’re going to walk you through everything you need to know, alongside some of the top strategies used by 7-figure affiliates.
What is SEM?
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) refers to the process of marketing campaigns that have the goal of increasing your search engine visibility.
Hence the name Search Engine Marketing.
Unlike Search Engine Optimization (SEO), SEM uses organic traffic and paid traffic such as PPC ads. Later on, we’ll use both of these channels to promote affiliate products.
In most cases, SEM is done to increase visibility on Google, but it can also be Bing, Yahoo, or other search enginses.
Is SEM Effective For Affiliate Marketing?
Yes! Like any other industry, SEM is one of the most effective ways to market affiliate products. However, running PPC ad campaigns needs some tweaks because most advertising, including Google, does not allow you to link directly to your affiliate product.
Furthermore, you can’t add your retargeting pixel onto your affiliate product, making it harder to run effective retargeting campaigns.
That being said, there are still some practical strategies we can use to market our affiliate products profitably.
Best SEM Strategies For Affiliate Marketing
Now that we have looked at some basic information on SEM affiliate marketing, it’s time to dive into the specifics.
The first SEM affiliate marketing method you can use is blogging with SEO. This is one of the most effective long-term methods, and it involves optimizing your blog posts for SEO. When done well, your article will then rank in Google and work for you 24/7.
This means every time somebody searches for the keyword your article ranks for, then clicks on your result and buys through an affiliate link — you earn a commission.
Pros of this method include:
- You can start this for a very low cost (although not recommended in competitive niches)
- It’s one of the best long-term traffic channels
- It’s the best affiliate marketing traffic channel for passive income.
Cons of this method:
- It can take MONTHS until you start seeing traffic increases

2. Paid Google Ads
Next, we have Paid Google ads, probably the second most popular SEM affiliate marketing tactic out there. However, unlike SEO, it uses Google ads, so you will have to pay for every click you get and build a profitable sales system that sells your affiliate products.
As mentioned in the beginning, you can’t use your affiliate link directly, so you need a bridge page. I also recommend email opt-in because if you only have a bridge page, you only have one chance to sell to your customer.
On the other hand, if you have an email opt-in, you have several chances to sell to your customer.
PPC Search Ads
Search ads appear at the top of the SERP when someone makes a Google search. The main benefit is optimizing them to be precisely what the user is looking for, increasing conversions. This is one advantage it has over Facebook ads.
They’re also speedy since they are pretty much like a tap that you can turn on and off. So as long as you pay, you could be on the SERP in the next 48 hours.
The downside of them is that they can be expensive. Also, users often don’t trust them as much as organic results; some even still ignore them completely. The good news is that you only pay per click, and some 7-figure affiliates like Liam James Kay use PPC ads a lot, so they are effective.
The other popular type of Google ads is banner ads, which are ads displayed on websites. Bloggers and websites sign up for Google ads. Then you pay Google to display your banners on their websites, and Google takes a cut.
These can also be effective because you can get access to a particular audience. However, we don’t know exactly what the user is searching for, so it’s not entirely as targeted as search PPC ads.
However, a tempting offer targeting a broader audience can work very well.
YouTube ads are also popular. Although since YouTube Premium launched, they have become slightly less effective since many users don’t get ads. That being said, they remain one of the most effective video ad types out there.
You can also manage your YouTube ads directly from your Google ads dashboard. Here, you also need first to build a bridge page or opt-in.
3. Bing Ads
Bing ads are pretty much like Google ads… But the version for bing and minus YouTube, of course.
The benefit compared to Google ads is that it’s usually a little lower cost, but most of the terms have less search volume. Still, it can be an effective channel when appropriately done, just like Google ads.
4. Affiliate Stores
Another popular SEM affiliate marketing is affiliate stores. This involves creating an e-commerce store with little buttons that link to the main store. When someone clicks the button, you earn an affiliate commission.
The primary way to get traffic to them is usually SEO, but PPC works too. Affiliate stores are typically effective in physical product niches.
Can You Combine Paid Ads With SEO?
Yes! This can have significant effects for your brand because you get the trust and authority from using SEO while getting the speed and flexibility of PPC. This is an approach that Amazon used, which as we all know worked out pretty well to say the least.
When doing this, keep the cost in mind and have focus on building a high-converting email back-end system… As this will help you maximize ROI.
