Walmart Affiliate Program Review 2020: Is It Worth It?

Affiliate Disclosure: Look, I'm working my ass off delivering value to you. So, yes any links that you see in this post are probably affiliate links to help keep this blog going. They are true recommendations and if you click on them and purchase, I probably earn a commission (at no additional cost to you).

Walmart is the world’s largest (brick and mortar) retailer and today, I will be reviewing the Walmart affiliate program.

We will be taking a look at everything you need to know about the Walmart affiliate program.

Using this guide, you should be able to see whether or not you want to promote the Walmart affiliate program and if it’s worth it for you.

And, just to give you some sort of warning, I’m not a fan of the Walmart affiliate program, so this review will be rather negative.

What Is The Walmart Affiliate Program?

In case, you don’t know what an affiliate program is, it’s a program where you can sign up as an affiliate and promote products to earn a commission.

The Walmart affiliate program is the affiliate program from the world’s largest brick and mortar retailer, Walmart.

Of course, this means that there are TONS of products that you can choose from which you can promote to your audience.

As you can see, the Walmart affiliate program really does offer a wide selection of products.

But of course, an affiliate program needs more than a wide selection of products in order to be good, as well as profitable.

Walmart Affiliate Program: Pros and Cons

Here is a table that shows the pros and cons of the Walmart affiliate program.

Pros Of The Walmart Affiliate ProgramCons Of The Walmart Affiliate Program

Extremely Low Payouts❌

Information On The Walmart Affiliate Cookie

The cookie duration is 3 days, which again is pretty short.

If you don’t know what a cookie is, it’s basically something that gets attached to the visitor saying that you sent him.

The duration is the time in which this cookie stays attached to him.

If he purchases within this duration, you still earn a commission.

What Products Can You Promote?

You can promote 99% of products that are sold on Walmart with very few exceptions. During the signup, you will be told that the following products can not be promoted i.e you earn 0% commission:

  • Apple products
  • Food & Household items
  • Gift Cards
  • Personal Care
  • Impulse Merchandise
  • Precious Metals

It sounds like you can’t promote a lot of products, but that’s probably around 1% of items on Walmart. (estimated)

Note: This is subject to changes made by Walmart at any point.

How To Signup For The Walmart Affiliate Program

In order to signup for the Walmart affiliate program, you have to get manually approved.

You can signup for the Walmart affiliate program here.

Due to the low-payouts, if you’re not getting approved, then there is not much point anyway, see why below.

Walmart Affiliate Program Commissions & Payouts

The payouts are incredibly low compared to a lot of other affiliate programs.

Although recently, I have been used to promoting digital products which of course, usually have commission rates of 40-75%, the Walmart affiliate commissions are still incredibly low.

A lot of the categories pay 1% commission i.e 10 cents from $10, as shown in the image below.

Walmart affiliate program review: Payouts

(Source: Walmart Affiliates)

The only two categories that really stand out with decent payouts are:

  • Contact Lenses
  • Business & Personal Checks

All other categories have extremely low payouts.

On a $10 sale, you would make around 10 cents to 40 cents.

The only way you could make this worthwhile is if you are promoting something that converts really well to a very large audience.

And, even with for example contact lenses, I wouldn’t really see how it would be worth your while, as they are pretty cheap and when they need to replace them, they are not going to come to your website first to buy through your Walmart affiliate link.

Why Are The Walmart Affiliate Payouts So Low?

Walmart makes a lot of money, right?

So, why are the payouts so low for affiliates?

The problem is that those items have all kinds of costs attached to them.

Production costs, shipping costs, etc. and of course, Walmart still needs to make a profit too.

Of course, they could maybe be a little higher, but I guess Walmart does not need to have affiliates, as they are a well-recognized brand.

How Does The Walmart Affiliate Program Work

The Walmart affiliate program is pretty simple and works similarly to most other affiliate programs too.

You can get creatives, banners, and (deep) links, just like most other affiliate programs.

However, there are a few rules with the Walmart affiliate program which are:

  • Your website must be family-friendly
  • Your traffic must be mostly from North America
  • Your website has to be active when you apply.

I mean, this is pretty obvious stuff.

You’re not going to want traffic from a country where Walmart does not exist and then join the Walmart affiliate program.

A Weird Clause In The Terms & Conditions

When I was skimming through the Walmart Affiliate Terms & Conditions/Affiliate agreement or whatever you want to call it, I noticed something really weird.

They basically say that they don’t want “blogging sites”.

Are known as “blogging sites”, defined for purposes of this Agreement as sites that contain only blogging and no other form of informational content;”

I think they don’t know what blogs are or they are referring to free blogging platforms like .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com

Over 30% of Websites are blogs and the rest are probably:

  • Businesses/Stores
  • Portfolios
  • Web applications
  • And similar

I.e people who will not sign up for the affiliate program.

I’d say 70% of people who signup for affiliate programs are bloggers.

Walmart Affiliate Program: Tools For Affiliates

Walmart does provide its affiliates with some useful tools, as well as some useless ones.

Walmart WordPress Plugin

The Walmart affiliate program also has a WordPress plugin, although it seems (very) outdated.

As you can see in the image below, it was last updated 4 years ago.

And, even then, it had 3/7 one-star reviews.

What I find funny about this is that WordPress.org, of course, is a platform primarily for bloggers, and of course, earlier on we spoke about that weird clause within the Walmart affiliate terms and conditions.

Walmart Affiliate SDK

This tool is pretty cool, you can create buttons with your affiliate link and embed them on your website.

Although, I personally feel that if you have a blog, for example, these sorts of buttons look very unnatural and in some cases can even hurt conversions.

Then again, it depends on your website/blog.

Walmart Affiliate Ad Generator Extension

Lastly, Walmart also gives you another way of generating banner ads & creatives with their chrome extension.

This might be useful for somebody using chrome and just trying to get new banners quickly, when testing different banners on their website.

How To Promote The Walmart Affiliate Program

The only way promoting the Walmart affiliate program is worth your time would be through a blog that generates a lot of traffic.

However, it wouldn’t really be worth it in most cases, as you can find niche-specific affiliate programs that pay out much higher commissions.

I really don’t see any other way of promoting the Walmart affiliate program being worth your time due to the low payouts.

If you would like to start a blog, make sure to get my free e-book sent to your email which also covers how to pick a profitable niche.

In order to even generate let’s say something relatively small like $500, you would need 120-500 sales per month, you’re not going to do that promoting on a small social media account.

And, even if you do have some huge social media account, promoting other products would probably be a lot more profitable.

Walmart Affiliate Program Alternatives

So, what are the Walmart Affiliate program alternatives?

Amazon?

In case you didn’t know, Amazon recently cut the commission tier and now they look pretty similar to the Walmart affiliate program commissions.

See image below.

(Source: Search engine journal)

So, what should you promote instead?

Well, I think when looking for affiliate programs, you shouldn’t look directly at these big retailers.

The reason being is that they will always care less about their affiliates.

Best Alternative: Niche-Specific Affiliate Programs

I could give you some huge list of 100 affiliate programs of which none would be in your niche, but that wouldn’t be helpful.

So, instead, I will just give you a little guide on how to find better affiliate programs in your niche.

For this example, we are going to say that we are in the home improvement/garden kind of niche.

And, you can also play around with the search maybe “garden affiliate programs”.

You will find a ton of blog posts that list all of them.

And, you can also type in “brand name + affiliate program”.

Most brands out there have affiliate programs.

Is The Walmart Affiliate Program Worth It?

I’m going to say no here which is something that I don’t say very often.

If you are earning 1% – 4% commission on let’s say a $100 product.

You will need 120 – 500 sales per month to make $500 per month.

That’s like a little side hustle that you do next to whatever your main source of income is.

If you can drive 120 – 500 sales per month of anything, you should make a lot more than $500 per month.

For example, an affiliate program that I recently reviewed, the Kartra affiliate program pays 40% recurring commissions and starts at $99 per month.

Selling something like this is, of course, a lot harder, but it’s definitely worth it.

Can The Walmart Affiliate Program Be Worth It?

There is always some sort of way it can be worth it.

For example, maybe for the home/garden blogger who started blogging 10 years ago and pulls in 200,000 visitors per month.

If you get a huge amount of traffic, the well-known brand that Walmart has can lead to a lot of sales, so of course, it will be worth it for some people out there.

My point is that for the majority of people it won’t be.

Can You Make $1,000 per month With The Walmart Affiliate Program?

Of course you can, but it’s not easy.

You would have to generate a decent amount of traffic in order to earn $1,000 per month with the Walmart affiliate program.

Usual conversion rates are around 1-5%.

If you’re promoting products from Walmart, I would like to think that the conversion rates are pretty high, towards the 5%.

Now, you can do the maths with the product that you have in mind and see how much traffic you would need for it to be worth it.

Walmart Affiliate Program Review: Conclusion

All these tools that the Walmart affiliate program offers, do not make up for the incredibly low commissions.

I really don’t see how it would be worth it to promote the Walmart affiliate program over some other affiliate programs that pay more.

The sticky cookie also doesn’t exactly have a long duration with just 3 days.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend the Walmart affiliate program, unless you are linking out to them anyway for some sort of reason.
